Être photographe de portrait c’est vivre des expériences constamment, à la fois physiques et émotionnelles. Afin d’atteindre les lieux les plus reculés, j’ai enduré de longs périples, souvent inconfortables. On peut oublier la fatigue mais pas la chaleur, et je me rappelle avoir erré dans les rues de Varanasi sous 45°C, traversant des rivières et parcourant des pistes boueuses pendant des heures pour me rendre dans les villages isolés du Vietnam. C’est aussi avoir la capacité à gérer les situations imprévues, telles que ne pas trouver de bateau prêt à me déposer sur les îles des Bajau en Malaisie, me perdre des heures dans les routes de montagne à la recherche d’un village ethnique ayant été déplacé ou alors avoir affaire à une moto qui tombe en panne dans une région isolée. Ces expériences peuvent mener à la frustration, qui se dissipe aussitôt que je rencontre une nouvelle personne.
Le cœur de ma philosophie en tant qu’artiste a toujours été de prendre mon temps avec les gens, d’apprendre à les connaître et à créer une complicité que je nourris lorsque je retourne leur rendre visite plusieurs fois. Après tout, même si ces périples sont exténuants, ils ne me permettent pas seulement de me découvrir, mais ils assouvissent également mon besoin de rencontrer les gens, de découvrir de nouvelles cultures et de promouvoir la diversité.
Bien au-delà des techniques que j’utilise dans mes photographies, le défi est de faire passer les émotions indescriptibles que je ressens à chaque rencontre. J’emporte avec moi de nombreux beaux souvenirs, des instants passés à fumer le cigare dans les rues de Cuba, à discuter de la vie et du monde avec ces inconnus qui soudainement ne sont plus si inconnus après avoir partagé ces quelques moments de complicité ou fumé une pipe en compagnie de grand-mères vietnamiennes des hauts plateaux.
Leur réaction lorsqu’ils se voient sur l’appareil photo, souvent pour la première fois, et qu’ils ne reconnaissent même pas leur propre visage, vaut tous les efforts réalisés pour les trouver.
